New game celebrating Barnsley’s history launched

A new game which celebrates the fascinating history of Eldon Street in Barnsley will be launched in the town Centre on Saturday, 8 April.

BeastEL has been specifically created to retell the stories of Eldon Street, reimagined with cool characters and magical missions.

People are invited to head down to Glassworks Square for the launch on Saturday April 8 to meet larger than life characters from Eldon Street’s past and help solve the mystery of the missing Eldon Beast, as well as the chance to play a giant version of the game. With crafts and activities taking place it will be an action-packed day. The event will include interactive performances with actors including the WE Great Ladies, Mark Mark Productions and Story Trails.

Performances start at 11am, 12.30pm and 3.30pm and last around 30 minutes. Join the characters as they play the game together between 2.00 and 2.30pm. The event is suitable for families and children over 5.

The game has been created by storyteller and game designer Rebecca Dye as part of the Eldon Street HSHAZ project, which is bringing the important historic high street back to life through an exciting cultural programme and restoration works. The HSHAZ is a partnership project between Barnsley Council and Historic England, led by Barnsley Museums.

Jon Finch, Head of Culture and Visitor Economy, said: “It’s great to see people of all ages interacting with the history of Eldon Street in such an exciting way. The game really captures imaginations and brings the stories of the street to life connecting to younger generations.  The game will be available to enjoy for years to come and is a great way of putting Barnsley on the map!”
